What is PPI?
PPI means pixels per inch and describes how many pixels are packed into one inch of a digital display or image area.
Pixel Density
Pixel density describes how tightly pixels are packed within a physical display area. Higher PPI means more pixels are placed into each inch.
Pixel Pitch
Pixel pitch is the physical distance between pixels and can be estimated from PPI using 25.4 ÷ PPI.
Screen Resolution
Screen resolution describes the number of horizontal and vertical pixels, such as 1920 × 1080.
PPI vs DPI
PPI describes pixels per inch, while DPI usually describes printer dots per inch. The terms are related but are not interchangeable.

PPI Calculation Formula
Diagonal Pixels = √(Width² + Height²)
PPI = Diagonal Pixels ÷ Diagonal Inches
Pixel Pitch (mm) = 25.4 ÷ PPI
1920 × 1080 at 24 inches
Diagonal Pixels: √(1920² + 1080²) ≈ 2202.91
PPI
2202.91 ÷ 24 ≈ 91.79 PPI
Pixel Pitch
25.4 ÷ 91.79 ≈ 0.277 mm
Why PPI and Pixel Density Matter
PPI helps describe how densely pixels are packed into a physical display area and can help compare screens with different resolutions and sizes.
Monitor Comparison
Compare monitors with different resolutions and physical screen sizes using their PPI.
Laptop Displays
Understand how screen resolution and compact display size affect pixel density.
Mobile & Tablet Displays
Compare pixel density across smaller high-resolution screens.
UI & Design Testing
Use PPI as one reference when evaluating how interfaces and graphics may appear across displays.

Frequently Asked Questions
Calculate the diagonal pixel count using the screen width and height in pixels, then divide it by the diagonal screen size in inches.
PPI = √(pixel width² + pixel height²) ÷ diagonal screen size in inches.
PPI means pixels per inch. It describes how many pixels are packed into one inch of a display or image area.
PPI describes pixels per inch, while DPI usually describes printer dots per inch. PPI is commonly used for digital pixel density, while DPI is commonly associated with printing. DPI Calculator
No. PPI depends on both pixel resolution and physical screen size. The same resolution produces different PPI values on different screen sizes.
